this is so timely for me, Alan. i have started a new full-time job recently and while i'm so very thankful, i'm still adjusting to the demands and the commute. in any case, a couple verses from Leviticus have lately been echoing in my mind that resonate with your post today - from the chapters on the Day of Atonement, which indicate that that day was a day of rest and that "you must deny yourselves." (Lev 16.31 & 23.32). It really does require self-denial and that thought has been quite convicting, enriching, and liberating to me lately...all at once. i really appreciate this quote today and wish that many people i know and love could experience the blessing and liberation that come with a discipline of rest.

[…] I must take Ward’s counsel as it relates to eight hours of sleep and one day a week free of work. I’ve figured out that I function at my best with seven-and-a-half hours of sleep. And even though I frequently give a presentation on Sabbath and have a chapter on the theme in An Unhurried Life, I have not always been good at the practice. Either I believe this is for me or I do not. If I do not, I haven’t much business proclaiming the virtues of a practice I have not incorporated myself. Thank you, Jesus, for ways you are mentoring me and stretching me into healthier ways to live and work. (I wrote a bit more about overwork in the post: “Overwork Hardens the Heart.” […]
